Vodka 02: A Sparkling Vodka

I am still trying to wrap my mind around the concept. Sparkling vodka? A bit of effervescence in my ice-cold premium vodka? I am not really sure how I feel about it, though I am curious.

In the U.S., Admiral Imports is now importing a sparkling vodka from Britain called Vodka 02. This product was invented by Philip Maitland and patented in 2003. The process to produce this sparkling vodka remains a tightly held secret.

The vodka is made from a blend of wheat, malted barley, and charcoal-filtered British spring water. It is batch distilled and triple-filtered in one-hundred year old copper pot stills. And it has a light effervescence. The bottles are made of heavy crystal glass and the vodka comes in two strengths: 02 Vodka at 80 proof and O2 Vodka 945 Super Premium Vodka at 94 proof.

The vodka is currently available in New York, New Jersey and Florida though it will continue to spread across the U.S.

I don't know how it tastes and I am not sure that vodka should have bubbles. But it does offer some intriguing possibilities if it is good. It might make some new and interesting martinis. I'll keep my eye out for it and report back when I do find it.
