Near Boston, Mass. They would get Chinese -- always ordering shrimp with lobster sauce. Eventually they caved and asked about it, finally admitting to themselves that there was a flavor of meat to the sauce. At the time, they were told by the waiter that indeed, the sauce was simply a sauce to be used on lobster, hence 'lobster sauce'. As told to me, though, the meat was ground beef. Concerning the historical nature of this tale -- I was born in 1953. They married as he left for WW2, so they'd have been 'sinning' in the late '40s. Not that this tale elucidates anything. Just fits into the speculations in the article. I stumbled across your blog while planning our upcoming trip to Portugal, and I am extremely impressed with the depth of your reviews and the amount of content! We are headed to Portugal (Porto, Douro Valley, and Lisbon) for a week to celebrate my birthday in March so we have a quick time at each place. You have so many great recommendations that I've been reading, but do you have any absolute favorites/must-do for restaurants, wine, tours, etc. in Porto & Douro Valley? We are also fellow foodies & wine lovers and it's hard to choose what we should do when there are just so many good options!

Appreciate any insight and tips you are willing to share in advance!

Maddy
Maddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07977169222143338774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-70022226658500402632024-01-07T23:51:45.802-05:002024-01-07T23:51:45.802-05:00Wonderful, thank you! My husband is from Midwest, U.S. and I'm from South Texas, as we enjoyed my childhood family's version of Goulash, my current family started a conversation about the origins of the dish. Alexa offered a Hungarian recipe that sounded essentially like beef stew. Of course, after dinner, I came to Google because I felt confident that couldn't be the only version - our Goulash came from my Grandmoher's kitchen (a 1950's-70's home economics teacher no less).

Your thorough research was exactly what I hoped to find. One thing though, where I grew up in South Texas - we were more likely to use the little shell pasta. That's what we had tonight too. :) Bell Peppers, tomatoes and all. My personal spin is to add chopped calabaza squash instead of diced potatoes. janina143https://www.blogger.com/profile/00257470533979576828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-3969485949775936032024-01-04T10:59:09.778-05:002024-01-04T10:59:09.778-05:00My Great Grandfather is credited by NY Times (Moll...My Great Grandfather is credited by NY Times (Molly O'Neil- Writer) as the inventor of Manhattan Clam Chowder. I don't see any ...That's very interesting. I don't see any mention of the status of milk or cheese according to Dr. Salisbury. And I agree, the main difference is the omission of onion. It could be that he hit upon the FODMAP concept, but was unable to understand why it worked. Unfortunately he didn't suspect wheat enough, since it's a major FODMAP. He lived in a time when people routinely thought cereal was a good thing. Pretty sure he was contemporary to Mr. Kellogg. And a lot of what he says sounds like Natural Hygiene, which eventually led to veganism, but originally wasn't vegan at all, but focused on fasting. He even mentions fasting as a cure for "meat fermentation."

Just as a side note, of course his patients seemed sick. Why would a healthy person seek him out? I guess, to smear his reputation. Get cheap seats, for about a$1, watch the Celtics and then watch as the wooden floor would be taken up so that we would then see a Bruins game. After the hockey game ended, we would head over to Slades Barbeque for the greatest food bargain in Boston. For $1.50, or so, we would have a 1/4 of a chicken, potatoes, veggies, and a drink. After eating at Slades, we would then go further up on Tremont St., to a bar that would be showing war movies on a big screen. We would each pitch in a buck or to buy a couple of pitchers of beer and enjoy 1 or 2 of the movies for that night.
