As two examples, Asian and Portuguese restaurants can often offer inexpensive prices but also the diversity you want.

Myrna, that is very true. Bycatch is a significant issue and we need to give fishermen more options of what they can catch and sell to consumers.

Marco, I understand your love for salted cod, which I agree is quite a treat. But, we must be careful as there are new studies that cod may be endangered even more than we thought.Richard Auffreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03948647697847819742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-8340546713957907932012-01-23T13:17:51.070-05:002012-01-23T13:17:51.070-05:00Locally caught mackerel is very good too -- and fa...Locally caught mackerel is very good too -- and far milder than sardines or tuna. Is there another fish that can be bone, skin free and yet just as healthy and easily grilled?Restaurant Supplyhttp://www.usfoodsculinaryequipmentandsupplies.com/category/cooking-beverage.do?nType=1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-39829322837455335132012-01-23T09:48:50.621-05:002012-01-23T09:48:50.621-05:00Good advice Richard. But I can think of a couple turn offs for some people... If you cook them inside (usually fried), they will really stink up your house. Also, they are full of little bones that require a bit of skill and patience to pick out, something that most people don't want to deal with.

With all that said, I will not give up my salted cod, aka bacalhau in PT, never... :)Marcohttp://www.travessiawine.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-7603891773202831332012-01-23T09:14:15.746-05:002012-01-23T09:14:15.746-05:00Agree! If we learn to enjoy all that the ocean offers, fishers will earn a better living and there will be more fish to go around.Myrnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10885955138235233678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-17354589651425513862012-01-23T08:15:08.085-05:002012-01-23T08:15:08.085-05:00Richard - You'll get no argument from me about...Richard - You'll get no argument from me about this advice. The biggest problem is that the only restaurants likely to serve a sustainable diversity of fish species are generally at the top tier of the price scale, putting this option out of reach for most consumers.

Take a random sampling of the restaurant menus deemed 'affordable' and you will see ONLY the typical salmon and tuna, even cod has fallen out of fashion, replaced by the noxious farmed tilapia.Frederick Wrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07608810132703009856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405633513402883204.post-59574104085928641942012-01-23T07:36:29.257-05:002012-01-23T07:36:29.257-05:00This is really interesting, You're a very skil...This is really interesting, You're a very skilled blogger.
