Day Four Continued...
Lunch was at the Casa Avelino Restaurant in Burgos. This was a casual restaurant with a bar and dining room up front, and a second, quieter dining room in the back. We ate in the back dining room which was actually a bit more elegant than the front room.
Our wine was a 1999 Ysios Reserva Rioja. An excellent wine. Interesting cherry, strawberry flavors as well as mild spices. A smooth wine with mild tannins. A good pairing with the various foods we ate for lunch.
Our multi-course lunch began with Stewed Pork Link Sausage which was actually a spicy chorizo. Delicious! Just an excellent sausage. And our next course was more sausage, though this time is was Morcilla, blood sausage, which was fried with roasted red peppers. The Morcilla is made with rice. Though blood sausage may not sound appealing, it too was simply delicious. A great texture and lots of taste. I could have made a meal of either of these two sausages. Our third course was Leon-style beef jerky, more just various thin sliced hams and sausages.
Next, we moved away from the pork products to a Castilian garlic soup. This soup had egg in it, like the soup I had had previously. It was very good, with lots of garlic flavor.
Our main entree was a roasted suckling lamb with salad. This lamb was superb. Tender, meaty, moist and very flavorful. My second time in Spain with lamb and once again it was so very delicious. Even the simple salad was very good.
Though we had already eaten so much food, there was still dessert to come. This was Cheese ice cream with candied quince. Though that dish might also not sound appealing, it actually was very tasty. It has its own unique flavor and is creamy and sweet. I finished my entire dish despite feeling full. Now I know why many people enjoy a Siesta after a long lunch.
Service was excellent. Overall, this was an excellent lunch. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area.
