Spanish Vacation: Day Two-Taberneros
During the early part of our second day in Madrid, we spent some time exploring the city. At lunch time, we stopped at Taberneros, a tapas restaurant recommended by Cellar Tours. This place is located close to the Plaza Mayor.
The restaurant is not your typical tapas bar. It is more of a sit-down place though there is a bar where people can stand at. The decor is also a fusion of modern with traditional. A very interesting place.
Their wine is kept behind a glass wall and they have an extensive wine list with Spanish wines from many different D.O.s. They also have wines from other countries though few U.S. wines. I ordered a 2005 Canopy Malpaso, a Garnacha from the Mentrida D.O. This was a delicious red wine, with fine fruit flavors and a nice balance.
We ordered a few tapas for lunch, knowing that we might eat more a little bit later. The menu certainly had a lot of enticing choices.
--Gambas, shrimp, in a cream sauce. Plenty of tender shrimp in a tasty sauce.
--Potatoes in a garlic sauce with seafood. An interesting sauce with pieces of unknown seafood that tasted very good.
--A large salad with plenty of fresh veggies. Another good choice.
--Croquettes with meat. This seemed to be a popular choice as we saw it on several tables. The croquettes had a nice, crispy exterior and a creamy interior with some type of minced meat. Delicious!
Service was very good. This is a great place to relax for lunch if you want to sit and dine on some creative and tasty tapas. It was an excellent recommendation and I would second it to anyone visiting Madrid.
