Wine Dinner: Melissa's Main Street Bistro

Yesterday, I attended a wine dinner at Melissa's Main Street Bistro (the former KroMel's). They will be repeating this dinner on October 28 (Sunday), from 6:30-9pm. Based on my dining experience, I would definitely recommend that you call and make reservations.

We began our evening with a glass of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. I am not a big fan of Pinot Grigio but I enjoyed this wine. It was full bodied with good citrus flavors, including apple. The wine sees no oak so all you get are its fruit flavors. A nice start to the evening.

We received a basket of hot breads and thin breadsticks. There were several different types of breads and they were delicious. I love fresh, hot bread and this basket was definitely pleasing.

Our first course was the Panzanella Salad which has Marinated Tomatoes (of various colors), Fresh Basil & two pieces of Crusty Baguette with 10 year Old Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil. The tomatoes were fresh and the baguette was thin, crunchy and tasty. This course was paired with a 2006 Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay. This is not an overly oaked wine. It was actually relatively mild with subtle citrus fruits.

The second course was two Smoked Diver Sea Scallops with Roasted Corn Pudding Drizzled with Pumpkin Seed Oil. These were definitely very smoky in flavor and they were good-sized scallops. The pudding was almost like a type of muffin and had a very good corn flavor. There were actual kernels of corn in the pudding. The wine pairing was a 2002 St. Francis Claret. This was a dark red wine with a spicy nose. On the palate it had dark berries and spices. Because of the smokiness of the scallops, this wine aired up well with the dish.

The main course was a Slow Roasted Sausage Stuffed White Marble Farm Pork Loin Chop Served Over Black Truffle Mashed Potato with Baby Brussels Sprouts. It was finished with a Toasted Sage Demi Glace. This was a large piece of pork loin that was rolled around the sausage stuffing. It was a very meaty and tasty loin. I liked the flavor of the sausage and its spices as well. The potatoes were very interesting too and also delicious. This dish was paired with a 2005 Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon. This was a milder Cabernet, with nice berry flavors and a touch of spice. It was a smooth wine with a long finish.

Dessert was a Cinnamon Brioche French toast with Pumpkin Ice Cream, Pecans, and drizzled with maple syrup. You receive two pieces of French toast and they were cooked just right. Very tasty. The ice cream was also very good, with just the right amount of pumpkin flavor. I just felt that it had a little too much maple syrup. I think it would have been better with more of a drizzle of syrup. It still was a very good dessert.

The wine dinner only costs $55, plus tax and gratuity. That was a very reasonable price for everything you get. I definitely recommend you call for reservations.
