1) On January 15th, Massachusetts will celebrate “Chowda Day” in Massachusetts, a long-standing tradition of Legal Sea Foods. In 2022, it was proclaimed an official holiday, where the restaurant offers guests a cup of the restaurant’s New England Clam Chowder for $1, (dine-in or take-out).
The chowder has been served at every inauguration, a testament to the dish’s irresistible appeal but also highlights its role in American celebratory customs. The hearty, comforting bowl of chowder has warmed guests during winter inaugurations and offered a taste of New England’s finest, regardless of the political climate.
2) Amidst the cold front, a couple area restaurants are turning up the heat for fireplace season:
Abe & Louie’s: One of the best kept secrets about celebrated steakhouse Abe & Louie’s is the cozy fireplace table in the rear of the restaurant. Flanked by a pair of high-backed chairs, this intimate table-for-two is perfect for sharing a bottle for wine while indulging in one of their premium 40-ounce cuts – a tomahawk or porterhouse – prepared for two.
Coach Grill: Their dining room has a homey feel with ornate draperies and a fiery hearth carved into stonework. (There is also a fireplace in the second dining room.) Warm up with a French onion soup au gratin or clam chowder before diving into the menu of signature steaks, chops and seafood. Coach Grill also offers specialty “plats du jour” each evening ranging from crab-stuffed shrimp to pan-roasted duck breast and steak Diane.

Hot sauces are exploding in popularity, as is the growing of peppers at home to create them from. Attend an evening where we taste our way through the fascinating history of peppers in all their tongue tingling and colorful glory, from mild to the insanely hot. In this two hour session we will explore their botanical and scientific components, as well as how the art of fermentation factors in, including of course the vinegar component and aging. We will also discover how other flavors such as sugar, fruit, salt and garlic all affect the sensory process.
To assist us in sampling so many spicy flavors, we will pair them up with some equally exotic companions - beer cheeses. These cheddars and other varieties are made with beers from Heddy Topper, Wachusett, Two Roads, Lawson's Finest, New Belgium and more. How the hot sauces and cheese (another fermented product) come together will be a big part of the fun!
The class is taught by Ken Zuckerman, a food industry professional who has worked in specialty food and beverage for over 25 years. He's also on the board of the National Mustard Museum in Wisconsin - another fermented and often spicy product with a vinegar base. Capacity is limited.
The class costs $49 and you can sign up HERE.
5) After 13 years in Davis Square, Posto, an Italian restaurant, has relocated to Assembly Row in Somerville. I used to be a big fan of Posto but haven't dined there in several years, prior to COVID. I look forward to checking out their new location. And if you want to check out its cuisine, you might want to go to their new Happy Hour, which is held Monday-Friday, 2pm-5pm. During Happy Hour, in the Bar and Lounge, Appetizers will be Half-Priced. Try their Arancini, Meatballs, Garlic Pane, Carpaccio and more.
