Boston's Inexpensive Bar Bites

If you want some of the best value food in Boston or Cambridge where should you eat? Well, a good choice often is to sit at the bar, where they may have a special bar menu with less expensive choices. Here are some of the restaurants which currently have special value bar deals.

Avila Modern Mediterranean offers eight “Pinchos” for only $6 at their spacious bar overlooking the main dining room. Items include: Mixed Olives in Orange Zest; Burrata Cheese with Olive Oil; Spicy Chorizo Mussels; White Anchovies with Olive Oil; Gorgonzola Mac & Cheese; Crispy Calamari with Aioli; Jamon Serrano Reserva; and, Crispy Fries with Cheese Fondue.

On their main menu, Avila also offers an additional eight “Small Plates” for $6: Goat Cheese Truffle Croquettes; Escargot with Garlic Butter, Pernod and Parsley; Sauteed Chicken Livers with Tomatoes and Cilantro; Kobe Beef Meatball and Parmigiano; Yucca Sticks with Chorizo Aioli; Steamed Mussels with Saffron Cream; Crispy Squid with Lemon Mayo; and, Baked Moussaka.

Enjoy the spacious bar or find a snug little corner of your own and enjoy a pint and satisfying snack. Cuffs is an Irish bar with the odd reminder of the premises’ former function, Boston police headquarters. Cuffs offers a wide variety of appetizers and bar plates including: PT Farm Pulled Pork Sliders ($4); Potato Frites with Truffle Ketchup ($5 – also available in sweet potato); Crispy Home Made Pork Rinds with sour cherry and apple compote ($6); and, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus ($6).

Restaurant dante features hot and cold “Sfizi” (Small Plate) menus nightly at the bar, where all items are offered at $5. “Hot” items include: Carne (traditional meatballs, tomato sugo); Arancini (porcini risotto, scarmoza, truffle honey); Tomino (soft goat’s milk from Piedmont, sweet and sour peppers); Mini Maile (little pork burger, Vermont cheddar, maple sugar, pancetta); Mini Manzo (little beef burger, buffalo mozzarella, smoked pepper aioli, fried cippolini); and, Calamari (fried calamari, lemon and peperoncini, grilled lemon thyme aioli). “Cold” items include: Baccala (salt cod, peperoncini, potatoes, celery); Cannellini (white bean drip, black truffle, crostini); Pomodoro (bruschetta, native wine rip cherry tomatoes, garlic, Sicilian oregano); Fegatini (bruschetta, Tuscan chicken liver, giardiniera); Ricotta (bruschetta, house-made ricotta, salsa Genovese, toasted pine nuts); Speck (smoked prosciutto, pear mostarda, pecorino ginepro).

Choose from Legal Sea Foods’ featured varieties such as: Kumamoto, fresh cucumber taste with a creamy finish; P.E.I., assertive, briny and earthy tones with a clean ocean finish; West Coast, sweet citrus briny start with an earthy, fruity finish; and, East Coast, clean North Atlantic flavor.
