Kanpai!
Raise your Sake cup and toast Haru, a new Japanese restaurant located below the shops of the Prudential Center.
Haru is part of a chain operated by Benihana, Inc. There are seven locations in New York City, one in Philadelphia and one in Boston. In Boston, Haru occupies the former site of Dick's Last Resort and it has been open for only about five weeks. There is a parking garage next to the restaurant and it is a short walk to the MBTA station.
I was invited to check out Haru and I was very much interested in visiting this new place. I love Japanese food and Sake and I am always up for checking out new restaurants. So this past Wednesday evening I dined at Haru. How did it rate?
I will preface my review by noting that as Haru is relatively new, it is still in that period where they are likely working out a few kinks. I will take that into consideration when assessing the restaurant. The same consideration I provide for all new restaurants.
As I entered the restaurant, the first thing that really stood out at me was the lounge area, which is to the right of the entry way. The long bar in the lounge is topped by onyx and is lit from below, presenting an enticing look. The lounge area has plenty of extra room for people who will be standing in the area. The rest of the restaurant also has a very hip and modern decor, but with subtle Asian influences. There is a long sushi bar and a fairly large dining area. The lighting is muted, giving an air of intimacy. Haru presents a very appealing ambience. It certainly does not feel like a chain.
The dining room looks out onto Huntington Avenue and I can see this as being a great people watching spot in the summer. There is one special table, at the back wall, that seats around eight people and is a bit set apart from the others. A good place for a special occasion and a bit more privacy. Though the other tables generally are spaced well, there is a bit of a problem for couples. They seem to break up four-tops for couples but leave only a minimal space between the tables. That closeness may annoy some people.
Haru has a full bar which includes numerous Sakes and specialty drinks. The specialty drinks include such items as Sake cocktails, Mojitos, and Champagne cocktails. These drinks cost $9-$10 which seems reasonable, especially for Boston where cocktails can sometimes cost $10-20. The cocktails come in stemless glasses, the cup portion sitting on a small, thick circular base instead. These glasses would be less prone to being knocked over than stemmed cocktail glasses. They carry a couple Japanese beers as well, Kirin and Sapporo, both on draft.
The Saketini, a combination of Vodka, Sake and Plum wine, with cucumber peels in it, was visually interesting and a popular drink at our table. It was not overly sweet and had a good, smooth flavor. The Komodo Dragon had vanilla vodka, coconut rum, pineapple juice and blue Curacao. It had a bit of sweetness and a nice coconut flavor. There was a Green Tea Margarita that sounded interesting though I did not taste it. Curiously, almost all of the Champagne cocktails are actually made with Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine.
For Sake, they stock about eight Sakes by the glass or bamboo pitcher, as well as another eleven available by the bottle. Their chilled Sakes included Nigoris, Junmais, Ginjos, and Daiginjos. A glass costs $11 or under. Bottles vary in price, ranging to over $100 for the Daiginjos. These are typical prices for quality Sake. I especially enjoyed glasses of the Kira and Kaori Sakes. They were smooth, flavorful and pleasing to the palate. They also carry Onikoroshi, the "demon-slayer", which I have had before. It is a very smooth and mellow Daiginjo.
Haru provides both lunch and dinner. For lunch, they have special Bento boxes and lunch plates, ranging from $12-$17. I will have to check out lunch sometime.
The dinner menu has Sushi, Sashimi, Maki rolls, Special rolls, Appetizers, Soup, Salad, and Entrees. Most of the menu is standard Japanese fare though they have a few unique appetizers and sushi rolls such as the Lobster Mango Ceviche and the Kiss of Fire Roll. Prices are generally reasonable for a Japanese restaurant. Average price for an appetizer is about $10. Average price for an entree (non-Sushi) is about $20. Sushi prices are higher than average though comparable to most other high-end Japanese places in Boston. I'll talk more about the Sushi prices later.
We began the evening with an assortment of Special Rolls. Presentation was excellent. The rolls were quite colorful and visually interesting. There was the Dice-K Roll, consisting of gold leaf, mango, avocado and spicy red and white tuna. The Boston unCommon roll also had gold leaf, as well as crunchy spicy salmon, tuna, avocado, mango and black tobiko. I believe there was also a Phoenix Roll, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, cucumber and kaiware. We had one other roll though I am not sure which one. I enjoyed the varied taste mixes of these inventive rolls. They are priced around $13-18.
I then moved onto some nigiri, which I generally prefer to maki. They have a long list of available sushi/sashimi. I ordered some tuna (maguro), otoro, white tuna, salmon (sake), smoked eel and sweet omelet (tamage). They sell their sushi by the piece rather than as a pair which is the norm. So, as an example, two pieces of the maguro, would cost $6.50. This is a comparable price to other high-end restaurants, though about $2 more than average Japanese restaurants.
So are you paying extra just for the location, just because the restaurant happens to be in Boston? Are you paying extra just because it is more of a high-end place? No, I do not believe that is the case at all.
The pieces of sushi are actually large, significantly larger than what you get in most average sushi places. So for the extra cost you are getting plenty of extra fish. And that makes the cost far more reasonable. The sushi tasted very fresh and was quite delicious. The otoro was as buttery smooth as it should be and the eel had a great smoky taste. This was excellent sushi and I was very pleased with it. I could have easily made an entire meal out of the sushi.
I also tried the Miso Black Cod appetizer ($13), which consists of a good-sized piece of Black Cod with grilled asparagus. The fish was flaky and tender, with a nice sweet glaze from the miso sauce. A dish I would recommend. I cannot say the same for the Shrimp Tempura ($8.50). I received four pieces of shrimp but the tempura coating was not crisp enough and almost seemed soggy. It was disappointing, especially as I am a big fan of tempura. The Crispy Calamari ($9) was a much crispier choice. There were plenty of rings of fried calamari with a thicker and crunchier coating. I also liked the spicy peanut sauce that came with the Calamari.
There were a few minor service issues though service was generally good. But, I am willing to give them some leeway on this as they are still relatively new and working out such issues. It mainly seems that a few servers need some additional experience. This is a typical problem with new restaurants. It is something though than can be fairly easily remedied and which should improve soon enough.
By the time I was finished with dinner, the restaurant was quite busy, nearly full. And this was only a Wednesday night. On a weekend, I am sure reservations would definitely be needed. It seems Haru has already become a popular place even though it has been open only for a short time.
After dinner, I moved to the lounge to spend a little time sipping Sake and chatting with a friend. The bartenders were very personable, helping to set a welcoming mood. One mentioned that on the weekends, the people are stacked four deep at the bar. I certainly can believe it, even for such a new place. It is an enticing, hip spot for a drink.
Overall, I was impressed with Haru. It has an excellent ambience, very hip and modern. The sushi is first-class and reasonably priced for the quantity and quality you receive. There are plenty of other dishes which sound interesting and which I would like to try. Their Sake and cocktails are diverse and very good. Service was good, though it needs a little improvement. This is a new restaurant headed in the right direction.
I will certainly be returning to Haru and hope to see you there as well.

The claim from inside the ‘hive’ is that while there will be plenty of surprises, this will not be your typical Irish fest. “No green beer…but what we are planning is a sophisticated evening of amazing Irish comfort food and authentic, world-class, Irish entertainment for a mature audience,” said Co-Owner, Jack Bardy.
This year at the ‘hive,’ a “special guest” performance will kick of the night of Irish filled festivities at 5:30pm. Husband-wife duo Matt & Shannon Heaton will then bring their shared musical experience and love for Boston’s Irish music scene to the stage at 8:00PM. Boston-based, Matt has made his musical home in Boston’s Irish scene while Shannon has co-founded Boston’s Celtic Music Fest and teaches for Boston’s Comhaltas. Their modern take on traditional centuries-old Irish songs, which features Irish flute- and guitar-driven tunes and traditional Irish-style singing, will bring out emotion and Irish pride from the Irish and non-Irish alike. Matt and Shannon’s entertaining and organic onstage banter is almost good as the music (almost)!

Thursday Sips & Nibbles
I am back again with a new edition of Thursday Sips & Nibbles, my regular column where I briefly highlight some interesting wine and food items that I have encountered recently.
**********************************************************
1) Continuing the monthly A Taste of Italy tour, A Tavola introduces its new menu from August 1-18, Tuesday through Saturday, from 5pm-10pm, Featuring a three-course dinner, Chef Vittorio Ettore takes guests on an educational and culinary tour through his favorite regions of Italy. He explains his techniques and inspirations throughout the meal, giving his guests not just a taste of Italy, but also a complete culinary experience of the chosen region.
This month, Chef Ettore leaves the mainland for the island of Sardegna. Positioned in the heart of the Mediterranean between Spain and Italy, this month’s menu draws inspiration from both east and west. The menu features Sardinian favorites such as Malloreddus, a smaller gnocchi made of semolina rather than potatoes, and Botarga, a dried fish roe that is traditionally used as a condiment. Inspired by the nearby Spanish region of Catalonia, Aragosta alla Catalana features a Spanish-influenced lobster dish typical of Sardegna. The three-course meal closes with the island’s traditional dessert, a sweet cheese ravioli known as Sebadas.
The full menu consist of:
--Malloreddus, Arselle e Botarga (Sardinian Saffron Semolina Gnocchi, Clams and Botarga)
(Cured Mullet Fish Roe)
--Aragosta alla Catalana (Warm Lobster, Wright Locke Farm Heirloom Tomatoes, Red Onions, Basil and Lemon)
--Sebadas (Crispy Ricotta Ravioli, Lemon Zest, Honey and Pistachio Gelato)
In addition to this three-course dinner, A Tavola is now offering Saturday Lunch. The more refined menu features familiar dinner favorites as well as new lunchtime options. Rucula Salad, Pasta Bolognese, Porchetta Sandwiches, and Grilled Margherita Flatbreads are just a few dishes that Chef Ettore brings “to the table” for lunch. The daytime menu still embodies A Tavola’s rustic approach to Italian cuisine, representing their commitment to serving eclectic Italian dishes with fresh, local ingredients.
Cost: Pre fixe Sardegna menu is $49 per person; each course is also available A la Carte – Appetizer is $15, Entrée is $29, and Dessert is $9.
Reservations are welcome by calling 781-729-1040
2) Legal Sea Foods will celebrate its 4th annual Oyster Festival returns this fall. From September 19 through October 16, Legal Sea Foods restaurants will celebrate everything oysters via menu features and special events.
“Our oyster bars are a hallmark of our restaurants,” observed Roger Berkowitz, President and CEO of Legal Sea Foods. “And no longer should oysters be just the favorites of gastronomes. We want to educate all our guests and encourage experimentation. We’d like everyone to share the belief of the idiomatic saying, ‘the world is your oyster.’”
Special events will be held at various Legal locations and will include: Shellfish Shindig, a ‘shuckout’ of $1 oysters at Charles Square’s vast outdoor Terrace Bar (September 23 from 2-4pm; a la carte pricing); Oyster Brewhaha, a four-course oyster and craft beer dinner at the Kendall Square location (October 2 at 6:30pm; $65 per person); Sip Slurp and Sup, a trio of small plates paired with oyster-friendly wines hosted in the Park Square location’s 10,000 bottle wine cellar (October 3 at 6:30pm; $45 per person); and, the grand finale event, Mollusk Mania, an “everything oysters” party featuring a raw bar of eight varieties and four passed appetizers on the all-weather rooftop at Legal Harborside (October 7 from 2-4pm; $40 per person).
3) Haru’s Boston location is celebrating its 5th Birthday with a special summer sweepstakes that comes neatly packaged: mystery envelopes. Beginning today through October, Haru will celebrate this milestone by offering their loyal patrons and friends a chance to win prizes.
To play, simply visit Haru in Boston from August 1 through October 1 to receive your mystery envelope (while supplies last). DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE. On your next visit to Haru Boston on or before October 20th (must be a different day than when mystery envelope was received), present the still-sealed mystery envelope to a manager to see what treasure awaits. Will it be a $10 Haru gift certificate? A complimentary sushi roll? A $100 AMEX gift card? Or even the grand prize of $500 in AMEX gift cards?
Everyone “wins.” Even guests who don’t win, win: holders of non-winning envelopes will receive a gift of a complimentary order of edamame. Haru: A Revisit
But a couple follow-up trips in the subsequent months did not please me, and I did not see any changes, except maybe some negative ones. There were still service issues, the tempura was still poor, and some of the other dishes just were not good. So I went elsewhere.
I was recently invited back, to see what changes they had wrought since then. There was a new General Manager, and matters had supposedly improved. I decided to give it a try, to see whether that was true or not.
I mentioned the tempura issue to the restaurant and received a reply from General Manager Michael Slavin. "After researching our Tempura Batter recipe, I found out we were not adding enough liquid to the batter. This is totally an oversight on my part. We have since modified our recipe to reflect what every other Restaurant in the Haru concept does; 4 parts tempura batter to 4 parts water and 1 part soda water (previously it was on a one to one scale). Since “revising” our in-house recipe, the consistency is much lighter and crispier on all of the Tempura items."
I will return to Haru in the near future to check out the tempura and hope that this issue gets resolved.
Service was exceptional, and the servers at the other tables appeared to be doing well and acting professionally. Service apparently had improved dramatically since my prior visits. Our server knew the food and drink menus well, and was attentive without being overbearing. All of the servers seemed to be busy working, rather than hovering together chatting.
Overall, positive changes do appear to have been made at Haru over the last couple years. But they still fail on the matter of their tempura. I will report back on the tempura matter in the near future.

The restaurant will reopen its doors exactly four months after the April 15 Boston Marathon attack with a grand opening event to commemorate the occasion. The restaurant will open to the public for dinner service on Friday, August 16, with lunch and brunch in the following weeks.
“Our restaurant has been- and will continue to be- a special destination in Boston. We are so proud of our staff and the team who has all combined efforts to help rebuild Forum into a new and exciting place for our guests to enjoy,” said General Manager Chris Loper. “We look forward to inviting our loyal guests, fellow Bostonians, and guests from around the world back to our wonderful new restaurant.”
Guests will notice a brand new bar at the front of the restaurant and a colorful rich décor on the first floor with numerous seating options from booths to a communal table and hi-top tables. The exterior façade has been completely redesigned with the new Forum Bar and Restaurant logo and new outdoor awnings. Guests will enjoy the welcoming seasonal patio and al fresco lounge area, as well as the fresh look of the interior, which combines a comfortable, yet upscale feel that compliments the creative new menus featuring inspired dishes focusing on local, seasonal ingredients. Brunch will be served on Saturdays and Sundays.
The culinary program at the new Forum Bar and Restaurant will be overseen by up and coming Executive Chef Dan Schroeder, who has spent several years working at prestigious country clubs across New England. Prior to that, Schroeder spent time in kitchens on the West Coast- including resorts in Oregon and Hawaii. Schroeder is a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute. The beverage program at Forum Bar and Restaurant was a collaboration between Forum Bar Manager Pete Polselli and mixology and spirits educator, Troy Clarke. Haru & Shrimp Tempura
Tempura, properly prepared, is an exceptional delight. A light, clean, crispy coating over shrimp, sweet potato, carrots and more. It is also a measuring stick I use with Japanese restaurants, to assess their quality. Can they make good tempura? If so, I bet the rest of their food will be equally as delicious.
On my last visit to Haru, a Japanese restaurant below the shops of the Prudential Center, I had issue with their tempura. The tempura batter was too thick, maybe overcooked, and felt spongy when I touched it. The matter was brought to the attention of their General Manager Michael Slavin, who stated.
So I recently dropped by for lunch, to determine whether the tempura had improved or not. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki lunch box ($13.75), which includes a California roll, 2 shrimp tempura, white rice and miso soup or salad. In fact, the box also had three pieces of veggie tempura, including a sweet potato. The shrimp tempura has definitely improved, and was much lighter and crunchier than my prior visit. It was now a proper tempura, though it technically still could have been a bit lighter. The veggie tempura were perfect, so they could make their shrimp tempura even better. But it is still very good and they certainly have made the necessary changes to their recipe. I would order it again on my next visit to Haru.
The rest of the lunch was very good too, as well as the service.

Thursday Sips & Nibbles
I am back again with a new edition of Thursday Sips & Nibbles, my regular column where I highlight some interesting, upcoming food & drink events..
**********************************************************
1) SKYBOKX 109 in Natick is a family-friendly sports bar and restaurant. Their new 'Whiskey Passport’ serves as a ticket for guests to explore the world’s finest whiskey, Scotch and bourbon. The idea is to get guests to try different forms/varieties of whiskey from all over the world as a way of expanding their palate.
The way it works is this. When guests arrive, they can ask to join the program for free, at which point they’ll be given an actual passport that they sign and date as their commitment to sampling 50 select whiskeys within one year. Each time they come into the restaurant to continue their worldly whiskey tour, they alert their bartender, who stamps the placeholder for each whiskey included in the tour. Categories, or “Stops” on the tour include ‘Hometown Heroes’ (New England), ‘The Rest of North America,’ ‘Kentucky Bourbon,’ ‘Irish,’ and ’Scotch.’ (over 60 whiskeys in house)
If guests fill up their passport with all 50 stamps within one year, they will receive the following:
· Custom-engraved glass – 1 side with roman numeral noting the order of completion, 2nd side with SKYBOKX logo
· T-shirt: SKYBOKX109 logo and ‘Whiskey 109’ on front, opening declaration (in the passport) on the back

4) At the end of this month, Boston area consumers will be able to purchase a dizzying selection of award-winning cheeses made from Massachusetts milk, all available under one roof. The Massachusetts Cheese Guild is partnering with The Trustees of Reservations to feature nearly 70 cheeses made by 16 local artisans at the 28,000 sq ft Boston Public Market, opening on the Rose Kennedy Greenway July 30. The partners hope to achieve two primary goals: to highlight the quality and diversity of Massachusetts-made cheese, and to promote and generate revenue for Massachusetts cheesemakers.
They are excited to bring their members cheeses, some never available beyond the farms where they are produced, to the Boston Public Market, and look forward to a long and successful collaboration with the Trustees of Reservations.
In addition to numerous hard to find cheeses, many previously sold only on area farms, the booth will offer a wide variety of made-in-New England items ranging from bottled milk and yogurt, to cheesemaking supplies and cookbooks, to maple syrup, honey, pickled vegetables and granola, condiments and crackers. Rounding out the merchandise mix are books and magazine, locally baked baguettes, wooden cutting boards, Trustees-branded clothing, sea salt, and preserves.
A fulltime general manager for the cheese booth has been hired. She is Gannon Long, formerly of Glens Garden Market in Washington, DC. Several part-time shopkeepers will share responsibility at the booth for spreading the good word about local cheeses, joined by volunteer cheese ambassadors from the Cheese Guild and the Trustees. Occasional demonstrations and Meet the Cheesemaker type events are planned for the future.
It is fitting that the vendor booth of Appleton Farms, Americas oldest working farm, will be a one-stop shop for cheese-lovers looking to sample the bounty the Commonwealth has to offer.

· T-shirt: SKYBOKX109 logo and ‘Whiskey 109’ on front, opening declaration (in the passport) on the back
· Whiskey 109 Hall of Fame: Photo and name of person in framed section in restaurant

Sake Lessons at Haru
Kudos to Haru, a Japanese restaurant located beneath the shops of the Prudential Center, for their efforts to spread Sake knowledge. Besides carrying 8 Sakes by the glass and 14 by the bottle, they also make a number of Sake cocktails, from the One Night in Tokyo to the Ultimate Saketini. In addition, they have been running a series of Sushi & Sake classes, to help educate their customers, and there are plans to make that a monthly series. I have presided over the Sake portion of those classes and recently they held an event for local bloggers.
During these classes, attendees get to taste three Sakes, such as the Kaori Junmai Ginjo, the Wakatake Onikoroshi Junmai Daiginjo and the Tsuki Usagi "Moon Rabbit" Sparkling Junmai. The Sparkling Sake usually ends up as one of the favorites of the night for many people. I give an informal talk on the basics of Sake and field questions from the audience. Plus, the attendees get to learn how to make a few different types of sushi, from basic nigiri to different maki rolls. You also get to eat the fruits of your labor, and there is plenty of food. It is an interactive class and has been extremely popular with the attendees.
Three of the bloggers who attended the recent class have posted their thoughts about it. Check out what they had to say about the event:

I recommend that you check out future Sushi & Sake classes at Haru, and learn about these Japanese treasures in a fun & tasty way.
