Japonaise Café and Bakery

(Originally posted 6/17/06)

I stopped by the Brookline location of the Japonaise Café and Bakery today to pick up some shoku pan and sugar donuts. There are at least 3 different locations, Brookline (on Beacon St.), Lexington and Cambridge (in Porter Square). This is a French/Japanese fusion bakery, stressing the Japanese aspect. They sell a variety of breads, pastries and sandwiches. The shoku pan is fresh baked, thickly sliced bread that is perfect for toasting, or making French Toast. It is very flavorful and they have a variety made with heavy cream. At $2.50 for 8 slices, it is expensive but I believe the quality is worth it. They certainly seem to sell tons of bread. They also have sugar donuts which are fresher and tastier than you will get in most donut shops.
