Kyotoya

(Originally posted 4/3/06)

Kyotoya is a Japanese restaurant on Montvale Avenue in Stoneham. It is a little hole in the wall that you can easily miss, wedged in a small shopping area. But, it has some fine food and is well worth a visit.

Over the weekend, I got some takeout from there. I have eaten there a number of times previously, and they even deliver to my house (an added bonus). They serve sushi and various other Japanese dishes including teriyaki, tempura and katsu. It is BYOB, though I have never done so and don't know the corkage fee.

The sushi is good, and can be inexpensive. Though the individual orders are average price, $3-6, they have bulk discounts. If you get 18 pieces, it only costs $20. The next bulk is 36 pieces, which goes for around $36 or so. This is a good discount. The sushi is fresh, and there is a good variety. It is not the best sushi I have ever had, or the largest, but it is good. One warning though when ordering in bulk: Do not order the maki rolls as part of the bulk discount. A maki order has an average of 6 rolls in it, and in the bulk, each roll is considered one piece. Which actually makes the maki rolls more expensive that way. If you want maki, order that separately and not as part of the bulk.

The tempura is superb, one of the best I have ever had. It is just the right lightness and crispness. You can order just a shrimp tempura dinner and get 6-7 long pieces of shrimp tempura. Yummy!! The other meals, the katsu and teriyaki are also very good. And they have special dinner and lunches where you get to mix your own meal with appetizer and entree.

Prices are very reasonable. Service is also very good.

They are one of my favorite places to eat. Always a great meal for short money.
