For brunch yesterday, I decided to stop at Gargoyles on the Square in Somerville. Though I have had dinner there before, I had yet to try their brunch. They call it a Disco Brunch as they have Disco music playing as well as a Disco ball lighting up the dining room. I chose to dine in the bar area, next to the windows that look out at the street.
In the dining room, they have a table with various coffees and teas, an all-you-can drink section for those having brunch. This is certainly a nice touch and you don't have to wait for a server to refreshen your cup.
The brunch menu has First Courses (like appetizers), Entrees and Sides. There is a mix of lunch and breakfast items available. Items vary from the usual to more exotic. You can get a burger or crispy duck wings, scrambled eggs or a cast iron crab dip.
I decided to start with the French Toast sticks ($7). These are exactly the type of French toast sticks you find in places like Burger King or in the frozen foods section at the grocery store. You receive six French toast sticks, with sliced strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar. They were cooked just right, crispy on the outside and soft inside. They were certainly tasty though they were nothing special.
I then had the Chicken N' Waffles ($10) that come with honey butter, peppercorns and Smithfield Ham Gravy, which I asked to have on the side. The waffle was a good-sized, circular waffle that was crisp and soft, just the right combination. The honey butter was melted atop the waffle and looked at first like syrup. It added a nice sweetness to the waffle without being overly sweet as some syrups can be. The chicken was a large, boneless fried chicken breast. It was a moist chicken with a nice crispy skin. Absolutely delicious. And the gravy was not a thick, heavy gravy. It was thinner, flavorful and perfect for dipping pieces of the chicken. For $10, you certainly get plenty of food.
I also ordered a side of bacon ($3) and received five, crispy pieces of bacon. Cooked just the way I enjoy and plenty of meat on each piece.
Service was very good. Overall, I was very pleased with brunch and there are a number of items on the menu that I would like to try. I almost ordered the special, an egg sandwich with duck sausage. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you receive. And the fried chicken was extremely delicious. Go check out their brunch.
