China Sky

(Originally posted 7/23/06)

Last evening, I tried the China Sky, a Chinese/Japanese restaurant in Winchester. It is near the center of town, around the block from the Ristorante Lucia. It is a very nice looking restaurant, clean and tastefully decorated. It seems a bit more elegant than the average Chinese restaurant.

The menu contains many different choices, both Chinese and Japanese foods. It is a bit pricey though. This is most evident in the sushi prices, which are $1-3 more than average. Because of those prices, we did choose not to get sushi. We concentrated on the Chinese dishes. We began with an appetizer platter which contained beef teriyaki, chicken fingers, chicken wings, crab rangoon, boneless spare ribs and spring rolls. We also had scallion pancakes and shrimp/vegetable tempura. All of the food seemed very fresh and was quite tasty. The chicken fingers had only a thin batter with lots of white meat chicken. The chicken did not get lost in a sea of batter as far too often happens at other Chinese restaurants. The tempura appetizer was a mound of vegetables and two big shrimp, a larger dish than I usually see for an appetizer. The tempura was a very light batter, just right for tempura. There was not a piece of food left at the end.

We then had a couple of the main dishes, crispy sesame beef and General Tso's chicken. The presentation of each dish was very nice, with vegetables cut and shaped into flowers. The beef was very crispy, in a intriguing brown gravy. The chicken was also cooked very well, though its sauce was a bit spicy, though not overly so. Again, we finished off both of these plates completely.

They have a wine list and a full complement of traditional and some new Chinese drinks. We had scorpions bowls that were very good, and not overly strong though you knew there was alcohol in them. I was disappointed that the only sake they had was "hot or cold", without even giving the name of the brand.

Overall, we had an enjoyable and tasty meal. We will definitely return. But, we probably won't order sushi there. I do believe the prices of the other dishes are reasonable for the quality and quantity you receive.
