Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is a sweet way to raise “dough” to battle breast cancer. During the week leading up to Mother’s Day, May 4 - 10, more than 150 restaurants and bakeries in the Boston area will bake unique desserts. 100% of sales from these desserts, which will generally cost about $8, will benefit breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Each year, approximately 180,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States and 40,000 women die of the disease,” say Eric Winer, M.D. “Early detection and improved treatment have enhanced the odds that a woman will survive breast cancer, and most women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer will go on to lead long and healthy lives. That said, we must strive to develop new and improved treatments. At Dana-Farber we are grateful for the annual support from Boston Bakes. These funds are used to pursue promising scientific leads and to conduct clinical trials that will lead to therapeutic improvements.

The 10th annual Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer honors Lucy Fonseca, breast cancer survivor and grandmother of Four Season’s Boston Executive Pastry Chef Tim Fonseca who has participated in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer every year since it began. “From the moment I learned about Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer ten years ago, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” says Fonseca. “For Pastry Chefs, the charity provides a unique way to contribute to an incredible cause.

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer began in 2000 by Carol Brownman Sneider to pay tribute to her mother, Eva Brownman, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1973 at age 44. Since its inception the event has raised more than $280,000.

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is made possible by the support of Boston’s great pastry chefs, Boston magazine, Charles River Publishing, Roosites and FOX 25.
